			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This year Osheaga invites the discerningly chic public to relax in a very special, alternate, luminary universe which will be bathed in black light, black velvet, and primal instincts.</p>
<p>This mescal-influenced Tiki party collective will dance around the fire and produce post-modern cave drawings on Black Velvet. Participating notable artists include Colorado sensation Jason Baalman, Lisa Czech, Christine Hale interpreted by Kevin Ledo, Billy Mavreas, Christine Redfern, Corri-lynn Tetz, and Rick Trembles.</p>
<p><strong>Le Black Velvet Lounge</strong></p>
<p>Cette année, Osheaga invite son auditoire aux goûts raffinés à venir relaxer dans un environnement unique et alternatif qui sera nimbé de lumières noires (blacklights), de velours noir et d’instincts primaux.</p>
<p>Le collectif à l’origine de cette idée a beau avoir abusé du mescal et des fêtes Tiki, ça ne l’empêchera pas de continuer célébrer pour produire des dessins postmodernes sur velours noir, dans l’esprit de la grotte de Lascaux. Parmi les artistes collaborateurs, notons Jason Baalman, Lisa Czech, Jack Dylan, Christine Hale interpreté par Kevin Ledo, Billy Mavreas, Christine Redfern, Corri-lynn Tetz, et Rick Trembles.</p>

<p>Colorado artist Jason Baalman  creates his art from unconventional, often edible, materials. His widely-acclaimed Elvis (Cheetos on black velvet) and his portrait of Conan  O&#8217;Brien have cheesed-up You Tube screens everywhere.  He has also been known to paint with spare ribs mixed with BBQ sauce, as well as with chocolate syrup, mascara, lipstick and Vegemite. His inspiring, &#8216;<em>even you can do it</em>&#8216; approach will be a fluorescent highlight in the <a href="http://marbelusarts.org/osheaga/?p=59" target="_self">Black Velvet Lounge</a> at this  year&#8217;s Salon des Arts.<br />

Jason Baalman</strong></p>
<p>Originaire du Colorado, Jason Baalman crée ses pièces d’art à partir de matériaux non-conventionnels et souvent comestibles. Son fameux Elvis (Cheetos sur velours noir) et son portrait de Conan O’Brien font partie du gratin – littéralement! – de ce que l’on peut retrouver sur Youtube. On sait qu’il aime bien peindre avec des côtes levées trempées dans la sauce barbecue, mais aussi avec du sirop au chocolat, du mascara, du rouge à lèvres et du Vegemite. Son inspirante philosophie de vie, du type « tout le monde peut le faire », illuminera au néon le Black Velvet Lounge du Salon des arts cette année.</p>

<p>Naomi Cook was born in the suburban slums of the greater Toronto stain  and grew up next to many of the main highways running through the  province of Ontario. Now she lives in Montreal where she makes comic  books, runs Montreal&#8217;s Red Bird studios, bikes fast, and spends a lot of time looking for  new ideas and ways to feed herself.</p>

<p>MOSS PIGLET</p>
<p>Les oursons d’eau, ou tardigrades, sont trois cent fois plus résistants que leurs cousins coquerelles. Ils sont translucides, aquatiques, et mesurent un demi millimètre. Voyez-les – si vous en êtes capables! – unir leurs forces dans une attaque acharnée sur un arbre.</p>
<p>Naomi Cook est née en banlieue de Toronto et a grandi au milieu de nulle part, entourée des grandes autoroutes qui sillonnent la province d’Ontario. Elle vit désormais à Montréal, où elle s’adonne à la bande dessinée, à la gestion des studios Red Bird dans le Mile-End et à des courses à vélo. Sinon, elle passe tout son temps à réfléchir à de nouvelles idées de projets, et à des moyens de payer le loyer.</p>

<em></em>Running from fear of its human predators, hordes of majestic mastodons run over a ledge and plummet to their deaths, breaking their skulls on the rocks below. Though this grisly scene may be unfamiliar to eastern Canadians, it represents the common fate of thousands of bison as they were traditionally hunted across the great plains. This hunting technique was devised approximately 5,700 years ago.</p>
<p>The bison provided the Aboriginal peoples of North America’s Great Plains with many of life’s requirements — sustenance, hides for clothing and shelter, sinew, bone and horn for tools, and dung for fires.</p>
<p>The principal means of killing large numbers of bison was the &#8216;buffalo jump&#8217;, where herds were stampeded over cliffs and butchered at the bottom. Buffalo jumps were common on the northern Plains. But the biggest, oldest and best-preserved buffalo jump in North America is the<strong><em> Head-Smashed-In</em></strong> (or estipah-skikikini-kots in Blackfoot) Buffalo Jump in the Porcupine Hills of southwestern Alberta. This project is named after this Albertan heritage site.</p>
<p>This artwork mingles print with performance, featuring large, Japanese paper bison cut-out kites flown over the Osheaga site.</p>
<p>Mathieu Matthew Conway is a multidisciplinary artist working in Montreal. He received<br />
his academic training from Concordia University where he majored in Painting and Drawing.<br />
He works principally in drawing, painting, print media and installation art. He has also<br />
been involved in curatorial activities, notably for Montreal&#8217;s Skol art center. He has participated in<br />
numerous group shows. He is presently employed by Atelier Circulaire, a production and<br />
promotion center for fine art prints.</p>
<p><strong>Le précipice à bison Head-Smashed-In </strong></p>
<p>Affolées par la peur, fuyant un prédateur, des hordes de majestueux mastodontes sautent au-dessus d’une falaise et trouvent la mort, brisant leurs crânes sur des rochers. Si cette scène morbide est étrangère aux résidents de l’est du pays, il s’agit pourtant du destin de milliers de bisons traditionnellement chassés dans les Grandes plaines. Cette technique de chasse date d’il y a 5 700 ans.</p>
<p>Le bison a fourni aux peuples autochtones des Grandes plaines de l’Amérique du Nord plusieurs outils pour survivre: de la nourriture, des habits et des couvertures, des matériaux pour des armes et des outils, et du combustible pour les feux.</p>
<p>La méthode favorisée afin de tuer de grands nombres de bisons a longtemps été « le précipice à bison », alors que les hordes étaient menées au haut d’une falaise et dépecées au bas. Les précipices à bisons étaient courants dans le nord des Plaines. Mais le plus grand, le plus vieux et le plus célèbre des précipices est le Head-Smashed-In (ou estipah-skikikini-kots en langue Pieds-noirs) des Porcupine Hills du sud-est de l’Alberta. Le projet de Conway est baptisé du nom de ce site patrimonial. Son approche artistique mélange ici l’imprimé à la performance, faisant voler des cerfs-volants en papier japonais à l’effigie de bisons sur le site d’Osheaga.</p>

<p>Founded in 2003, the YPF is a group of dedicated artists who appreciate the tenet that there is strength in numbers. By creating a forum in which they can explore and develop their respective metiers, the group enjoys the support and encouragement provided by a creative community. Moreover, they are able to foster a continual learning environment by taking advantage of each other&#8217;s diverse skills and interests, and can effectively organize and promote themselves and their work.</p>
<p>Based in Montreal, where they have had a prolific life as a collective,<br />
the group shows locally and abroad in places such as The Drake Hotel<br />
(Toronto, ON), All Tomorrow’s Parties (Long Beach, CA), Jeff Electric Gallery (Silver<br />
Lake, CA), The Open Gallery (Long Beach, CA), The Glass House (Pomona, CA),<br />

<p>Fondé en 2003, The YPF est un collectif d’artistes qui a compris que l’union fait la force. En créant une plate-forme où chacun peut explorer et développer ses talents d’artiste et d’artisan, les membres de cette communauté créatrice profitent du soutien sans cesse renouvelé de leurs pairs, afin d’apprendre les uns des autres en échangeant sur leurs intérêts et aptitudes. Plus important encore, les participants peuvent mieux organiser et promouvoir leur travail et leurs idées.</p>

</a>Under the direction of Jason Botkin and Rupert Bottenberg, EN MASSE is an<br />
ongoing series of artistic conversations, a non-linear dialog connecting many<br />
artists through the creation of large-scale collaborative black and white murals.The<br />
shape and character of each specific EN MASSE event is defined by the<br />
various artists who take part in the project, and the energies they individually and<br />
collectively bring to the mix.</p>
<p>EN MASSE brings together emerging artists drawn from the diverse fields of<br />
the ‘high’ and ‘low’ brow arts, the latter including graffiti, alternative comics, and<br />
illustration.</p>
<p>The EN MASSE mandate is twofold: first, to increase the visibility of new,<br />
young artists, and second, to foster community-oriented art events and programming, built upon a specific form of<br />
collaborative interaction between the chosen artists.</p>
<p>Our events are greatly enhanced through partnerships with a wide range of arts/<br />
educational organizations, such as Art Pop Montreal, EMSB<br />
(English Montreal School Board), various galleries, and of course, you, the public.</p>

<p><strong>En Masse</strong></p>
<p>Sous la direction de Jason Botkin et de Rupert Bottenberg, EN MASSE constitue une série de conversations artistiques en continu, une sorte de dialogue non-linéaire qui connecte plusieurs artistes via la création de murales géantes en noir et blanc. La forme et l’empreinte de chaque événement EN MASSE sont définies par les nombreux artistes qui y prennent part, alors que leur énergie individuelle et collective se transmet au projet.</p>
<p>EN MASSE rassemble des artistes émergents qui proviennent des beaux-arts autant que des arts de la rue, ceci allant du graffiti à la bédé avant-gardiste, en passant par le dessin.</p>
<p>Le mandat d’EN MASSE est double: tout d’abord, d’améliorer la visibilité de la relève artistique, et ensuite, de créer des événements créatifs orientés vers la communauté, bâtis sur un esprit de collaboration et d’interaction entre les artistes.</p>
<p>Nos événements bénéficient de partenariats établis avec diverses organisations artistiques et pédagogiques telles que Art Pop Montreal, la CSEM (Commission scolaire English Montreal), de nombreuses galeries, et bien entendu vous, le public.</p>

<p><a></a>Back when graffiti  was the whipping boy of popular culture, a couple of streetwise writers  decided to hold an event to show the public that graffiti doesn&#8217;t go  hand-in-hand with violent crimes. The first of its kind was held in 1996. Since then, Under Pressure has grown  steadily stronger. This year at Osheaga, the collective hijacks the  recycling box landscape, beautifying those drab green boxes that  contain the festival site&#8217;s recyclable refuse.</p>
<p>Time to liven up the renewable landscape with some wild animal colours, and Fleo, Oser, Bfour, and Arpi are the ones to do it.</p>
<p><strong>Under Pressure</strong></p>
<p>À l’époque où le graffiti tentait laver sa mauvaise réputation dans la culture populaire, une poignée d’irréductibles a pris la parole et lancé un magazine pour promouvoir les aspects positifs du graffiti, démontrant qu’il n’est pas nécessairement lié à la délinquance. L’inauguration s’est faite en 1996. Depuis, Under Pressure a pris du galon, culminant en une communauté forte et engageante d’artistes, d’auteurs et de lecteurs. Cette année à Osheaga, le collectif s’en prend à la boîte à recyclage, transformant les drabes boîtes vertes sur le terrain.</p>
<p>De pair avec la biodiversité, c’est le temps de montrer ses vraies couleurs!</p>
<p>Aussi, ne manquez pas le Festival Under Pressure 2010 au Parc de la Paix et aux Foufounes électriques, à Montréal les 14 et 15 août.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>With its debut installation at Galerie Pangée in February, 2009, the EN MASSE collective launched an exciting new element into the Montreal visual arts scene. In an unprecedented force of ink, the artists performed a monumental &#8216;<span class="il">art</span> jam&#8217; that covered every inch of the gallery’s walls.</p>
<p>28 artists with backgrounds in graffiti, comics, underground design and fine <span class="il">art</span> culminate their talents toward a collective experience of the spontaneous ecstasy of making marks. Brand new to Montreal gallery and museum spaces, EN MASSE is a movable feast of collaborative, improvised creation.</p>
<p>Curated by Jason Botkin, Rupert Bottenberg and Fred Casia, the Osheaga EN MASSE event features a dozen artists performing a large-scale, improvised and site-specific mural to the festival sounds.</p>
<p>EN MASSE: Osheaga En Masse</p>
<p>28 artistes expérimentés en graffiti, en bande dessinée, en design d&#8217;avant-garde et en beaux-arts joignent leurs forces en une culmination extatique qui carbure à la certitude de passer aux annales. Tout nouveau, tout chaud dans le paysage artistique montréalais, EN MASSE est un festin mobile de création improvisée à plusieurs mains.</p>
<p>À leur vernissage remarqué à la Galerie Pangée en février 2009, le collectif EN MASSE débarquait tel un élément frais et excitant dans le décor de la scène d&#8217;arts visuels locale. Dans un jet d&#8217;encre et d&#8217;idées sans précédent, les artistes ont créé une fresque monumentale couvrant chaque centimètre des murs de la galerie.</p>
<p>Supervisé par Jason Botkin, Rupert Bottenberg et Fred Casia, l&#8217;événement Osheaga EN MASSE présente une douzaine d&#8217;artistes unis dans l&#8217;improvisation d&#8217;une murale géante propre au festival, à ses ambiances et à ses sons.</p>
