The groundhogs of Île Ste. Helène have commandeered their annual media spotlight to protest against the use of fox urine on the neighbouring island of the Marmota Monax Archipelago. Fox urine has been increasingly used as a wildlife deterrent in public spaces where humans gather for large spectacles.

In an incredible act of solidarity, the groundhogs have insisted that Osheaga festival organizers promote human-wildlife relations by featuring Animals as a central theme in this year’s Art charette. With respect for their timely, heartfelt and revolutionary justice, we have obliged their wishes.

Celebrating the brighter side of the herd mentality, Salon des Arts features three collective installations this year, as well as a positively glowing group exhibit on the fuzzy, comforting walls of the Black Velvet Lounge. Colorado sensation Jason Baalman brings his fluorescent portraiture to the black-lit Lounge, working alongside Montreal luminaries. Group exhibits by The YPF, En Masse and Under Pressure throw sparks into the commons. A few stray cats mark the Salon des Arts terroir, bringing buffalo into the sky above us and tiny piglets into the small spaces around the base of a tree, emphasizing the distance between all creatures great and small.

Cette année encore, les marmottes de l’île Ste-Hélène ont brandi leurs têtes hors de leurs tanières pour protester contre l’usage d’urine de renard sur leur lopin de terre. En effet, l’urine de renard est un répulsif animal de plus en plus utilisé dans les espaces publics où se rassemblent de grandes foules humaines.

Dans un acte de solidarité inédit, Osheaga a plié sous les demandes des marmottes afin de promouvoir une relation plus directe entre l’événement et l’environnement. C’est ainsi qu’est né le thème Animaux de notre tente des Arts 2010. Avec tout le respect et l’affection que l’on porte à nos amis les animaux, c’était la moindre des choses.

Afin de célébrer notre côté grégaire, le Salon des Arts présente trois installations collectives cette année, en plus d’une lumineuse exposition de groupe sise au feutré Black Velvet Lounge. La sensation coloradienne Jason Baalman y installe ses portraits fluorescents aux côtés de l’illuminati underground montréalais. Les efforts collectifs de The YPF, En Masse et Under Pressure font des flammèches. Des chats de gouttière rôdent autour du Salon des Arts, des bisons flottent dans le ciel au-dessus et des oursons miniatures partent en guerre contre un arbre tout près, nous rappelant qu’en grand nombre, les petites bêtes peuvent bel et bien manger les grosses.
